It's Okay To Be Gay~

So what?

So, now that I have shoved all this info into your face…

You may be asking yourself, “Yeah, gay marriage is grand and all, but so what? What can I do about it? Why should I do something about it, I’m not even gay! I don’t want people to get the wrong idea, you know…” Well, to that I say, “Pah, there’s plenty you can do as a straight person to help with equality in marriage! Now, pass me the popcorn and I’ll tell you a story!”

STEP ONE:

Learn More

“What?” you may be asking, “But, why would you tell me to learn more? Isn’t this blog about learning more about gay marriage anyways? You hack!” Now, hold your horses there, Tiger! This blog’s purpose IS to help you learn more, but it can’t teach you EVERYTHING. The first step to solving a problem is knowing more. Look into the marriage laws in your state or country. What are the policies? Does your state approve of same-sex unions or of nothing at all? Has there been any motions to grant these rights before? How did the votes turn out? Knowledge is power.

STEP TWO:

Spread The Word

Now, what are you going to do with all the knowledge that you’ve learned? Just like rats in the sewer, you need to spread it like the plague! Tell your friends! Tell your family! Tell your grandmother! But, seriously, nothing is solved without a little knowledge. Tell everyone that equality in marriage is just like equality for other things like race and sex. Destroy the assumptions people have about gay marriage. No, no one is going to be marrying chairs in the near future. No, being taught about gay marriage isn’t going to make you gay.

STEP THREE:

Participate

See that blog roll right thar? (Well, maybe you can’t, but it’s around here somewhere, I swear…) Those are sites with lots of good way to get involved! So, DO IT! Find an organization near you in support of same-sex marriages and volunteer! Raise support! Ever little bit helps.

STEP FOUR:

Gather Allies

Well, what if you live in the one place that doesn’t have an organization for things like this? Then, make one! Be a leader! Grab a few of your friends and make an organization! Arrange rallies and bake sales! …well, maybe nothing like that, but even small meetings to spread awareness can’t hurt.

STEP FIVE:

Vote

“We the people” and all that jazz means a lot in America. As a democracy, we are given the right to vote to make our voices heard. SO, VOTE. Tell your senators and congressmen what you want! Send letters! Demand to be heard! Watch the news and be aware when opportunities to make change may pop up.

So, good luck out there!
